GCSE exam success isn’t just about what your child knows — it’s about how they perform in the exam.
Here are 🔟 proven exam techniques every student should be using:
1️⃣ Read the question twice
So many marks are lost by misreading. Slowing down at the start saves marks later.
2️⃣ Know the command words
“Explain”, “Describe”, “Evaluate” all require different types of answers — make sure they respond accordingly.
3️⃣ Use the mark scheme as a guide
The number of marks = the level of detail needed. Don’t underwrite (or overwrite!).
4️⃣ Plan longer answers briefly
A quick 30-second plan helps structure thoughts and avoids rambling.
5️⃣ Show working (even if unsure)
In subjects like Maths and Science, method marks can make a big difference.
6️⃣ Manage time carefully
Encourage them to allocate time per question and move on if they get stuck.
7️⃣ Attempt every question
There’s no penalty for getting it wrong — but leaving it blank guarantees zero.
8️⃣ Use key terminology
Especially in subjects like Science, Geography, and English — precise vocabulary earns marks.
9️⃣ Check answers if time allows
Simple mistakes (units, signs, missed questions) can be picked up at the end.
🔟 Stay calm and reset if needed
If they feel stuck, pause, breathe, and move on — they can always come back.
💬 As a parent, reinforcing these techniques can really boost your child’s confidence and performance.
