SATs can feel daunting for children and parents alike. Even though SATs are designed to check progress rather than define a child’s future, the build-up in Year 2 and Year 6 can create pressure, worry, and loss of confidence. Many families tell us they’re unsure how much preparation is helpful – and how to support their child without making learning feel stressful.
At East Dulwich Tutors, we believe SATs preparation should be calm, confidence-building, and focused on understanding – not cramming. Our approach helps children build strong foundations in reading, writing, SPaG, and maths, while also becoming familiar with SATs-style questions and test routines.
SATs preparation usually involves:
Reading comprehension (fiction and non-fiction)
SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar)
Maths (arithmetic and reasoning)
Confidence with test routines
Managing nerves and time
We work with children to identify gaps, practise SATs-style questions, and develop strategies for checking work and staying calm. Sessions are personalised and broken into manageable steps so children experience success early – which is key to building confidence.
Parents are supported too. We provide clear guidance on what to practise at home, how often to practise, and how to keep revision positive and balanced with school and downtime.
Starting early reduces pressure as SATs approach. Children who feel prepared tend to approach tests with more confidence – and confident children perform better.
