SATs Week Continues: Confidence Beats Perfection

Day two of SATs Week often feels very different from day one.

The nerves from Monday have usually settled a little, but tiredness can begin creeping in. For many Year 6 pupils, today becomes the real test of confidence, focus, and resilience.

After weeks — and sometimes months — of preparation, children are learning that SATs are not only about knowledge. They are also about staying calm under pressure and believing in themselves when questions feel difficult.

One of the biggest challenges pupils face during SATs isn’t necessarily the test paper itself — it’s self-doubt.

A tricky maths question or unfamiliar reading extract can quickly knock confidence. That’s why teachers spend so much time reminding pupils to:

  • Keep going

  • Stay calm

  • Read carefully

  • Trust their training

Children rarely need perfection to succeed. What matters most is persistence.

For parents at home, the conversations after school can make a huge difference too. Instead of asking:

“How do you think you did?”

Try asking:

  • “What was the best part of your day?”

  • “You worked really hard today.”

  • “What would help you relax tonight?”

These small changes help reduce pressure and remind children that their value does not depend on a score.

SATs are only one small part of a much bigger picture. They cannot measure creativity, humour, kindness, teamwork, or determination — all the qualities that truly help children thrive in life.

As SATs Week continues, the goal remains simple:

steady progress, calm minds, and doing your best.

And for every Year 6 pupil showing up this week and giving it their all — that is already something to be proud of.
